Is "Buy Low, Sell High" Market Timing?

“What’s the difference between ‘buy low, sell high’ and ‘timing the market’?”

That was a question posed by a friend recently. He said that he had been advised to “take some wins off the table and invest in under-appreciated assets”. He went on to say, “which sounds like trying to time the market.”

He may be getting good advice, but he is right to be skeptical.

Costs matter. Whether you’re buying a car or selecting an investment strategy, the costs you expect to pay are likely to be an important factor in making any major financial decision.

Some of these costs are easily observed, while others are more difficult to assess. When investing, different variables need to be considered to evaluate how cost‑effective a strategy may be for a particular investor.

Q3 2018 Market Review

Strong US economic growth, escalating trade tensions, Brexit concerns, continued normalization (rate increases) by the Fed, and a selloff in emerging markets characterized Q3 2018. While the focus has seemingly been on the political front, with a contentious Supreme Court nomination and “The Resistance” looking to make gains in the upcoming mid-term elections, the economic news in the US has been very good.
